We had the chance to chat with Michael and asked him a few fun questions, see below & get to know him a little better:
1) What’s the most epic dance party you’ve DJ’ed at a wedding and what song got everyone going crazy on the dance floor?
There are so many it’s hard to pick!
I had several parties where the grooms took their shirts off and everyone went nuts lol. Another one when the groom’s mom just jumped on the dinner table hyping the crowd like she was a rock star. But some of the most memorable parties come from California / the bay area. Many of the clients from the bay have a strong influence on music in their family, especially hiphop. I remember one party where every bay area song I played, everyone sang and danced. What got everyone hyped even more was seeing parents as well as the grandparents getting into it, dancing like there was no tomorrow!
2) Have you ever had any celebrity clients or guests at a wedding? If so, can you spill any details or share any fun anecdotes?
Yes! It was one the most nerve wracking moments of my life! When I first spoke to the client I never knew that she was a celebrity till a week before her wedding. Knowing I’m doing a wedding that even the news is covering got me so nervous. As the day came, I was surprised how my nerves were pretty calm and felt like any other wedding I have done. I saw other celebrities that I really wanted to say hi to and take pictures with, but told myself to remain calm and professional. Overall it was such an awesome experience, everyone was so nice as well as the celebrity newlyweds. They even took pictures with me!
3) Can you share a hilarious mishap that happened on the job, and how you handled it with a smile?
The only time I can think of is DJing my 10 year reunion. I’m not a drinker at all but my classmates kept feeding me shots. Soon after a few shots I started hugging everyone in the club lol. My friends sobered me up real quick with a lot of water and food! Luckily was able to finish up my set lol
4) How do you keep the energy up and make sure everyone is having a blast, even the grandma who never dances?
With me it’s important to study my clients and their parties’ music preferences before an event. I always prepare sets I know that works with different crowds. When the dancing starts, I’m constantly studying the party’s reactions and always trying to see what types of music works. Even with a prepped playlist, some crowds may lose interest so that’s when I dig into my 20+ years of DJ music experience and try all the different genres of music that will either get them dancing or singing.
5) Have you ever had any unique requests from a couple for their wedding playlist as DJ Kurious? If so, what was the most unexpected or surprising request you received?
Baby Shark lol
This is when it just started to get popular and there were no kids! The party went crazy! Lol
